BENU Hexagon – a passion perfect must possess for the pen addict!
A hexagon (from Greek hex, “six” and gonía, “corner, angle”) is a six-sided polygon or 6-gon. The total of the internal angles of any simple (non-self-intersecting) hexagon is 720°. But is a hexagon beautiful? Like, is it something one can fall terribly, madly in love with? Can a hexagon retain its six faceted personality and sweep one off the feet?
It can, if it happens to be from the Hexagon series by BENU Pens. A six-sided pen – one with a barrel that has six sides that is, is no big deal. But the BENU Hexagon is different – they have hexagonal figures built all over them, like scales on an advanced life form from some parallel time zone. A God, fit to be prayed and served, even loved, provided the permissions are sought and granted. What adds to the sheer chutzpa of the pens is the riot of colours they come in – imagination running wild, but stopping just short of going amok.
Laughs Alex Semanin, Benu’s co-founder and Chief Designer “the BENU Hexagon, after all is a collection that features the nature’s most perfect six-sided polygon shapes. Yes, they are graphic and flamboyant. They are meant to be. Aesthetically pleasing, balanced and harmonious, with its seamless symmetry and balance the Hexagons are a true inspiration for those who prefer edgy geometric designs”.
Yes, balanced they are – as in having that elusive perfection in weight and feel in the hand as one puts them on paper. Harmonious, as in the way the visual blast transforms – magically metamorphosing into a mechanical work of art, adding just that dash of divinity into even the most mundane of writings. And is edgy is certainly what this geometric shape is. By Euclid, give me more!
And why not? Alex Semanin and Kate Dmitrieva, co-founders of BENU are already being considered for the world’s design hall of fame simply because of the way they are revolutionising the way the world perceives the fountain pen. Their approach is ballistic – and their missiles carrying war-loads of happiness, a now trademark joie de vivrve – are indeed, weapons of mass creation that the staid and serious world of fountain pens had not dared to dream of before their arrival.
What is even more praiseworthy is the fact that their creations are so efficient in their functionality. Each unit sports a Schmidt stainless steel nib that is more or less, the globally acceptable standard of functionality and is fitted with a standard international converter that can be replaced with a cartridge. The acrylic resins that are used to fashion the pens are of the best quality and are a sheer delight as far as pleasures of the tactile kind goes.
The glossy, pearlescent of jewel-dazzling star effect that the BENU creations sport are no accident – they are arrived at painstakingly at the Moscow factory of the entity by master craftsmen who prepares the resins for each pen separately. And yes, the individual colours are matched manually, by hand! As a matter of fact, “handcrafting” in BENU is not another cliché that is thrown about in gay abandon – all their creations are literally crafted by hand, down to the minutest of details.

God, it is said took six days to create the world and humankind was created on day six. There are six points on a Star of David just like there are six articles of belief. There are six strings in a standard guitar and prime pairs differing by six are sexy, because sex is the Latin word for six. There is said to be no more than six degrees of separation between any two people in the World – nothing that the BENU Hexagon cannot bridge.
